What to pack for your South African safari adventure.

When it comes to packing for the holidays; chucking items in a suitcase in the hopes that you have everything usually means that you’ll leave the most important items at home. Packing for any holiday requires a fair bit of advance thought and planning - this is especially true of packing for a safari holiday.
There are several items that are absolutely essential for travellers embarking on an adventure in the African bush.

Safari Clothing Requirements

The animals aren’t bothered whether you’re wearing Prada or torn jeans, so be sure to pack comfortable and practical clothes for your safari. It’s also important to consider the time of year you will be travelling, African summer days can get intensely hot so be sure to bring along some lightweight, cool clothing. The mornings and evenings can get a little chilly, so it’s advisable that you pack a jersey or a sweatshirt as well as a rain jacket for those gorgeous summer afternoon showers.
As far as colours go, neutral shades are recommended when you are buying or packing your safari clothes – the aim is to blend into the surroundings rather than stick out like a sore thumb. Neutral colours will also reflect rather than absorb the sun’s rays so you’ll also be cooler. Remember that the African sun is intense and as such it’s imperative that you pack sunglasses, sun block and a protective hat.
A pair of good walking shoes is an absolute must when considering what to pack. Though you’ll be travelling on open Land Rovers you will also get the opportunity to go on bush walks with your ranger and tracker so you’ll want to be wearing the appropriate footwear.
As most safari lodges have pools, don’t forget to pack your swimming gear and a pair of comfy slip-on shoes. A refreshing dip on a hot African day is just the thing you’ll need to rejuvenate yourself in time for a thrilling dusk safari drive.
Casual wear is the order of the day when it comes to safari holidays so don’t feel that you need to pack anything too extravagant; the dinners at even the most luxurious safari lodges are very casual affairs. Besides the safari clothes you’ll need, don’t forget to pack: a pair of binoculars, your regular and anti-malaria medication, a book, your camera and video camera to capture all those special memories.
Leave your stress at home and get ready for the most exciting holiday of your life.
See you in Africa!
